Development and application of group play therapy program for the institutionalized children¡¯s social skill improvement

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop the group play therapy program for the institutionalized children¡¯s social skill improvement and examine the effectiveness of using the program on improving their social skills. Based on the results for the study, 12-session group play therapy program, which included 4 steps for making friends, expressing and controling emotion, learning social skills, and finishing, was developed. Then the researcher conducted the program for 10 institutionalized Children. 20 children of treatment group and control group were arranged at random. Treatment group children took part in the group play therapy program at twice a week for 6 weeks. For examining the effectiveness of using the program, the research instrument was "Social Skill rating System: K-SSRS". The data Social Skill rating system were analyzed by mean, standard deviation and ANCOVA between the treatment group and the control group observing differences between pre and post, and follow-up. And the data was performed "repeated measure ANOVA" to search intensity of program¡¯s effect. Major Findings were as follows: A group play therapy program improved institutionalized children¡¯s social skills. Especially, it improved the abilities of assertion, sympathy, cooperation, and self-control. The implication of study findings will be discussed.
